Last night while I was having dinner at the Governors Residense with people from Department of Education, PBA, PennCORD, and Allentown School District, we entered a discusiion on Civic Education in America and a greater discussion on the needs for Civic Education in Afghanistan. Though the purpose of the dinner was to celebrate good Civic Education in Allentown, much focus was placed on Afghanistan as the director of
Allentown SD and more specifically Myron Yoder and Melissa Bell were recieving the third annual Compass Award for Civic Education. They are the first school district to recieve the award. They have developed a K-12 program of literacy through the Social Studies as well as having the winning state teams in Project Citizen.

First I want to thank Don, Mike, and Sarah for a great assembly today. When I got back to my office I had to attend a webinair for new CFF coaches. While I was participating on the webinair I came across a cool site for Social Studies teachers. The name of this site is facing history, and its goal is to link history to moral decisions that are made everyday. So if you were teaching about genocide during WWII you could use the site to find current articles that relate history to what is going on now. Take a look and let me know what you think. -Andy
Don and I put this time line together last Friday using a web based application called Timetoast. It's a nice way to graphically represent information about the CFF grant that directly applies to the Social Studies Dept. If you're interested in using this type of application as the basis for a student project, or for your own use check out their site.
